Talking about “Forging new connections in a global workforce at Doncasters”

At simplyEXP 2023 I presented in case study sessions and at HR Tech UK, London 2024 on the Keynote Stage about “Forging new connections in a global workforce at Doncasters”.

As Global Head of Communications at manufacturing and engineering firm Doncasters, I spoke about the need to connect and communicate with a largely deskless workforce spread across global sites. Doncasters has 3,000 employees around the world, with a deskless workforce comprising 70 percent of these 3,000, as well as 20 manufacturing sites.

When I began working at Doncasters in 2022, it was after a period of change for the company.  Between 2010 and 2020 there had been 5 different CEOs, leading to a lack of trust and accountability, and it was after this that the new management came into place. Employee communications were still very traditional and took a ‘top-down’ approach.

Prior to building the communications platform Doncasters was unable to reach and communicate with all of their employees, and their communications platform wasn’t intuitive.

Despite having a large workforce, Doncasters has a two-person comms team, and this covers external communications as well as internal. Small team, large challenges. One of the key actions was to embed a new communications platform and in my sessions I discussed my learnings from this experience.
